Greenhouse Manager:  Open

Overview:

We use three greenhouses to grow all of our transplants for the farm operation and a small amount of in-ground produce for our winter CSA shares.  We have a main greenhouse that is 32’ X 96’ heated and is equipped with a ridge vent, two large overhead doors and roll up sides.  We have a smaller 18’ x 96’ house that is heated and vented conventionally with fans and roll up sides.  We also have a 18’x100’ greenhouse that is used for hardening off etc and is not heated or vented – open end walls and roll up sides.  The position of Greenhouse Manger is a bit unique because it is intense for a 5 month stretch.  We can offer employment to finish the season after the greenhouse work slows down if desired.  The work is a mix of managing the crew for doing large volume jobs but also a lot of time working by yourself or with one or two others taking care of the smaller jobs.  There is ample time for training to happen during March so applicants without a lot of experience are welcome to apply.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage crew seeding and transplanting in greenhouse
  • Daily watering and water management
  • Operating vacuum seeder and overseeing other greenhouse mechanicals
  • Weekly fertilizing and general fertility management
  • Scouting for disease and pest pressures
  • Operating a backpack sprayer for the application of OMRI approved sprays
  • Inventory of seeds, order as needed
  • Inventory of OMRI approved sprays, order as needed
  • Inventory of greenhouse trays, order as needed
  • Inventory of Soil, order as needed
  • Greenhouse organization and layout including surrounding area
  • Record keeping
  • Keeping us on schedule

Time of year / season / hours:

  • Position starts early March
  • 40 – 60 hours / week
  • March – end of July (other work available after Greenhouse works slows if desired)

Pay:

  • Commensurate with experience

Field Production Co-Managers:  OPEN

Co-Managers work together and with Ben to manage all aspects of production on farm and are responsible for managing the different field crews.  This position has lots of tractor work, harvest management, and handling daily logistics related to production.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage Field Crews during planting, weeding, other production tasks and harvest
  • When not managing crews or doing tractor work this position works with the field crews performing whatever task is at hand.
  • Must be able to drive pick up truck and trailer to move equipment to different fields
  • Tractor/Implement work consists of secondary tillage (perfecta harrowing / bed shaping / plastic laying, harrowing and more) and also flail mowing, front end loader (forks) operation and cultivation (basket weeding, finger weeding, tine weeder, S-tine cultivator, hillers, etc)
  • Tractors on the road:  All tractors are driven for considerable distances over the road.
  • Equipment maintenance including daily assessment, greasing, oil changes, etc.
  • Responsible for tractor safety when operating independently and with field crews

Time of Year / Hours / Pay:

  • Start date is somewhat flexible and can start as early as the first week in March and as late as the first week in May.
  • End date is somewhat flexible but generally the position runs to Mid November
  • Hours are 6am – 5pm, 5-6 days per week during the peak season
  • $20-25 per hour depending on experience

Required Skills:

  • Some tractor experience
  • Minimum 2 season experience on a commercial farm
  • A mechanical foundation
  • Ability to work by yourself for the entire day and also with a larger crew

General Field Crew:  OPEN

We have general field crew positions open for the 2024 season.  These are full time or part time positions that focus on weeding, transplanting, harvesting and many more field tasks. At least one year experience is preferred but not required. Field crew positions can have a flexible start and end date depending on applicant needs. Applicants should be hard working and reliable. Applicants should also be able to work for long days in all weather conditions.  Drivers license and able to drive box truck a must!  Farm work is fast paced and rewarding but also physically demanding. Field crew positions offer lots of opportunities to grow and learn about sustainable agriculture. Field crew positions start at $16.25/hour.

Distribution Manager:  Filled

Overview:

Mountain View Farm distributes over 1600 CSA shares per week from June through the end of October.  This position oversees the operations and staffing of the packing house and all of our CSA distributions.  It manages all floor logistics in the barn where our on farm CSA and produce handling happen.  It is the Team Leader for the group of people working in the Barn and is Ben’s point person for everything Post-Harvest.

Responsibilities:

  • Manages Share-room and Washroom Staff
    • Acts as a point person for Ben for all the staff that work in the barn
    • Responsible for morale, efficiency and all worker tasking in the washroom and share-room
    • Responsible for scheduling share-room shifts and filling in shifts when employees are away / sick / etc
  • Manages Floor Logistics in the barn
    • Produce in and out of coolers
    • Interface between the washroom and share-room
  • Manages CSA Distribution amounts
    • Works with Ben to set share amounts
    • Manages amounts through out the week
  • U-Pick Management
    • Opening and closing of u-pick crops
    • Setting amounts for different share sizes
  • Sign Management
    • Manages all signage including Produce / Product / Info / Promotions / U-Pick
  • Acts as a member of the team working in the barn
    • Jumps in to help wash when needed
    • Jumps in to help distribution when we’re busy
    • Covers distribution shifts when people are away or sick
  • Ordering and Inventory of farm market products
    • Manages restocking
    • New product and pricing additions

Required Skills:
